Qantas is said to announce the retirement of the A380 aircraft on August 31, 2026. Said that the A380 has been with Qantas since 2008, Qantas has expanded it’s operations from sydney to johannesburg, hong kong, and dallas recently. Since then, Qantas has become a foothold for most airlines, being that most of these things. Have fallen in demand ever since the COVID pandemic, and the Russia Ukraine war. I feel like these have started to create geopolitical shifts. however the shifts in these has dropped drastically due to the rise in fuel prices due to current events like the Iran war and all that. Qantas is sadly leaving there A380’s to the graveyard which I have no doubt I will miss. Air France, and China Southern have retired them. On August 24, 2026, Qantas announced plans to accelerate the retirement of its iconic Airbus A380-800s, part of its fleet since September 2008. The original withdrawal plan for the A380s was set to be completed in 2032, but it will be brought forward by four years.
The main factors behind this decision were the conflict in the Middle East, which caused fuel costs to rise sharply and kept the price of aviation fuel highly volatile, and the inherent disadvantages of operating four-engine aircraft. This volatility had a direct negative impact of 420 million Australian dollars on the airline’s operating profit for its fiscal year. Furthermore, operating four-engine aircraft with an average age of 17 years became operationally unsustainable due to both surging fuel prices and an expensive supply chain, accelerating the transition toward new wide-body aircraft entering the fleet.
